Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

When will the oil make landfall?

The US Coast Guard said that the massive 120 mile oil slick could hit the Louisiana coast as early as tonight. As of early today the slick was within 3 miles of the coast.  BP, the owner of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon that exploded causing the oil spill, is trying to contain the spill and has asked the US government to help in the containment process.
ABCNEWS.com reports that President Obama released a statement today saying that the federal government is prepared to help with the cleanup efforts.
"While BP is ultimately responsible for funding the cost of response and cleanup operations, my administration will continue to use every single available resource at our disposal, including potentially the Department of Defense to address the incident," Obama said.

It was estimated that 1000 barrels a day was leaking, but now it is estimated that 5000 barrels a day are leaking into the Gulf Of Mexico.  All efforts to shut down the well have failed and it may takes weeks for more sophisticated measures to take place.
As a safety measure the Governor of Louisiana has declared a state of emergency because of the oil slick.
