Flash Floods Kill 16 in Arkansas

At least 16 campers were killed and dozens are missing as heavy rain and flash floods swept through the Albert Pike Recreation Area near Langley.  State officials reported rrescue workers were able to successfully rescue 60 people and believe those missing are presumed dead.

Heavy rains caused the Caddo and Little Missouri Rivers to overflow their banks.  The waters from those rivers rose to 20 feet that rushed into the Albert Pike Recreation Area without warning during the night.  Most campers were asleep as the flood waters swept through their campsites.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe said that up to 300 people could have been camping at the time of the flood, the campground registry floated away in the flood waters.

CNN.com reported:  The state has set up a call center to gather information on possible missing persons as a result of this flood. The phone number is 888-683-2336. The call center will be open until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
